We're talking Bone Broth!

Bone broth. It’s crazy to see those two words together. What may be even more crazy to learn is that many people are beginning to drink bone broth, sometimes as often as every day or with every meal! That leaves a pertinent question…. WHY??

Bone broth has been around for ages…literally. Many cultures turn to bone broth for medicinal cures for illness. {Remember grandma’s delicious chicken soup when you were sick? You guessed it! Bone broth!} What you may not know is bone broth is very beneficial for your skin. That’s right! In addition to other benefits, bone broth is a nutritive superfood to the largest organ of our body! Bone broth is comprised of many nutrients that serve as “building blocks” our body needs to create cells. When focusing on our skin, bone broth has essential nutrients such as collagen, gelatin and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs for short) that treat our skin like royalty!

Skin is composed of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The dermis is literally made of collagen and some GAGs to “provide structural and nutritive support” (1). While collagen “makes up about 30 percent of the protein in your body” and is the main component of skin, it also “plays an important role in tissue development and regulation” (1). Dr. Kellyann Petrucci stated in her article, Bone Broth & Collagen- Your Best Defense Against Aging, that “from the age of 20 on, you lose about one percent of your collagen a year”. Low elasticity, the result of decreased collagen in the layers of your skin, leads to wrinkles, sagging and cellulite. Collagen can also help “prevent and fade away stretch marks” and is “necessary for healing scars and blemishes” (2). It is never too early to be proactive and nurture your skin, both inside and out!!

To tell you the truth, your skin needs more than nourishing oils and skincare products. We could use all of the fancy anti-aging creams available and they probably would not work. It also needs nourishment from the inside out! In an article published by Kettle & Fire, the author simply stated: “the health of your skin is a reflection of the essential nutrients you’re eating… and, more specifically, how well your body is digesting, absorbing and assimilating these nutrients”. Wow… YES!! What we put IN our bodies has an effect on our skin!

Oh, there is more…Would you have guessed bone broth helps decrease acne breakouts? It’s true! In addition to containing collagen, gelatin and GAGs to promote strong skin cell growth, bone broth has several essential vitamins and minerals. One of these key minerals, zinc, is “important in fighting acne and maintaining clear skin” (3). How amazing!! This crazy little drink contains so many important nutrients to benefit the body on multiple levels!

Consuming whole foods packed with what your body craves to heal and thrive creates an unbeatable, radiant beauty from the inside out. On top of that, when we are happy with our appearance and feel healthy, energetic and purely alive, our confidence level and happiness sky rocket! There is a “glow” about us that people notice and are drawn to. Nothing can compete with that.
